HDFC Life, ICICI Prudential, Axis Max Life, Tata AIA and LIC — compared on claim settlement ratio, riders, and payout flexibility.
To keep this comparison fair, all five ratios below are pulled from the same source and methodology — the IRDAI Handbook on Indian Insurance Statistics, individual death claims by number of claims, FY 2024-25 — rather than mixing each insurer's own self-reported multi-year averages (which use different, inconsistent time windows).
| Insurer | Claim Settlement Ratio | Claims Paid / Total |
|---|---|---|
| Axis Max Life | 99.70% | 20,165 / 20,225 |
| HDFC Life | 99.68% | 19,666 / 19,729 |
| Tata AIA | 99.41% | 8,526 / 8,577 |
| ICICI Prudential | 99.31% | 12,319 / 12,405 |
| LIC | 97.59% | 848,145 / 869,086 |
LIC's slightly lower percentage still represents by far the highest claim volume in the industry (~8.5 lakh claims/year vs. tens of thousands for private insurers).
Multiple variants (Life/Life Plus/Life Goal) and one of the lowest claim-rejection rates industry-wide.
Life Stage Protection auto-increases cover at marriage/childbirth; fast Insta Payout for high sum assured claims.
Policy terms up to 67 years and joint/spousal cover up to ₹50 Lakh under one plan.
Whole-life cover to age 100 with 100% premium return on maturity; 15% lower premiums for women.
India's largest insurer by claim volume, with a trusted public-sector brand and online-only lower-cost pricing.

Term insurance jargon, explained in plain English.
The guaranteed lump sum (or income) paid to your nominee if you pass away during the policy term. This is the "cover amount" you choose when buying the plan.
The percentage of claims an insurer paid out of all claims received in a year, as published by IRDAI. A higher, consistent CSR is a useful (though not the only) signal of how reliably an insurer pays out.
Optional add-ons bought alongside your base term plan for extra protection — common ones include Critical Illness, Accidental Death Benefit, and Waiver of Premium (which pays your future premiums if you're diagnosed with a serious illness or disability).
The number of years you actually pay premiums — which can be shorter than the policy term itself (a "Limited Pay" option), e.g. paying for 10 years but staying covered for 30.
A term plan variant where all the premiums you've paid are refunded if you survive the full policy term — costs more than a plain term plan, since a payout is guaranteed either way.
A window (usually 15-30 days) after receiving your policy document during which you can cancel the policy and get a refund if the terms don't match what you expected.
